From the photo desk

The Object Selection tool finds the subject in about a second. Dragging a rough rectangle around a product shot on a cluttered desk is enough — the marching ants snap to the edges of the object and ignore the background almost entirely. From there, a single click on the new Markup field lets you scribble a quick annotation telling the AI where to place a shadow or extend a surface, and the edit lands as a separate layer without touching the original pixels.

Layers are where the assembly takes shape. A stock image from the built-in Adobe Stock panel drops in as a smart object, a gradient map clipped above it shifts the mood, and a Light adjustment layer — new in this release — pulls the highlights down by half a stop without flattening anything. The non-destructive stack means you can walk a client through three lighting variations in the time it takes to toggle visibility.

For a poster layout, Illustrator vector shapes paste straight into the canvas and stay editable. The type tool pulls from Adobe Fonts and snaps to a baseline grid you set once. When the background of a supplied headshot needs replacing, Select Subject followed by the automatic mask cleanup sliders handles flyaway hair better than a manual brush pass would, according to Adobe's own lab notes for the feature.

Export wraps the file as a layered PSD for the archive, a print-ready TIFF, and a compressed JPEG for the web proof — all from one Save for Web dialogue. The session that started with a desk snapshot ends with a composed key art file, and the only rasterized layer is the one you chose to flatten on purpose.

First hours after installing

Let Photoshop rebuild its font cache before you open any project. The type engine scans installed fonts on first launch, and rushing into a file while that scan is still running can cause the text tool to lag or show missing-font warnings that aren't real. Give it three to four minutes of idle time after the splash screen disappears.

Set the scratch disk to your fastest internal drive before importing anything heavy. By default Photoshop can use the system drive, but on a machine with an external Thunderbolt SSD, redirecting scratch to that volume keeps the system partition from filling up during large compositing sessions. The preference lives under Settings > Scratch Disks, and changes take effect after a restart of the application.

If the Color Settings dialogue is still sitting on a generic profile, switch it to a preset that matches your output: North America Prepress 2 for print work, or one of the sRGB monitor profiles for screen-only delivery. A mismatch here is invisible on your display but shows up as washed-out exports on a client monitor. Adobe ships the app with a safe middle ground that suits neither camp particularly well.

Tap F to jump between full-screen modes for client presentations

The F key cycles through screen modes — standard, full screen with menu bar, and full black background for presenting work without desktop clutter behind the canvas. Holding Shift while pressing F reverses the cycle. Designers who present roughs over Zoom use the black-background mode as a quick focus tool.

Spring-loaded tool shortcuts return to the previous tool when you release the key. Holding M while painting with the Brush, for instance, temporarily switches to the Marquee tool, draws a selection, and snaps back to the Brush on release. It works with any tool that has a single-letter shortcut, and it shaves dozens of trips to the toolbar across a working day.

The Bird's Eye View feature remains oddly hidden despite years of inclusion. While zoomed into fine detail, hold H and click — the canvas pulls back to show the full image with a navigation rectangle, and releasing the click snaps you back to the zoomed-in position. It's faster than zooming out, navigating, and zooming back in, especially on large-format print files.

Right-clicking a layer thumbnail and choosing Select Pixels creates an exact selection from that layer's content in one step. For layer masks, right-clicking the mask thumbnail offers the same command, which is the fastest way to reload a complex mask you built earlier without hunting through the Channels panel.

The Light adjustment layer now keeps raw tonal edits inside Photoshop

Version 27.10 introduced the Light adjustment layer, and for photographers working with raw-to-PSD pipelines it means one less trip to Camera Raw. The layer sits above the image stack and controls exposure, contrast, highlights, and shadows with the same sliders you already knew from the Adjustments panel, but as a non-destructive layer it can be masked, blended, and toggled per comp. Before this addition, the same result required a Curves layer plus a Levels layer and careful channel work on both.

The AI Assisted editor, currently in Beta, shows up as a floating panel rather than a modal dialogue. It accepts typed instructions — type "warm the skin tones on this portrait" and it adjusts the color balance and saturation on the subject it detects. The Prompt to Edit field runs alongside the Markup tool, which lets you draw rough arrows, circles, and scribbles directly onto the canvas to tell the engine where an edit should land. The annotation layer can be hidden afterward or discarded, and the edit itself lands on a new pixel layer or a masked adjustment layer depending on what the prompt requested.

Masking and selection changes in this version allow you to restrict AI edits to a defined area: load a selection, activate the AI Assisted panel, and the prompt applies only inside the marching ants. This ends the earlier workflow of generating an edit and then painting a mask to contain it — the containment happens before the render, which saves a round trip.

Apple Silicon Macs launch the app natively without Rosetta slowdowns

Intel or Apple Silicon — does it matter? The build runs natively on both, and the installer detects the architecture automatically. On Apple Silicon machines the app launches and processes filters noticeably faster than the Rosetta-translated versions of prior years; on Intel machines it uses the 64-bit x86 path that has been stable through several releases. If Rosetta isn't installed on a fresh macOS setup, the installer will prompt for it — install it, restart, and run the installer again.

Will the Neural Filters work right away? The package includes a separate Neural Filters Pack that needs manual extraction to the Adobe UXP plugins storage folder. If the folder path isn't created by the main installer, the filters won't appear in the Filters menu. Check the path under Plugins > UXP > Photoshop inside the application's Library directory once extraction is complete.

What happens with Generative Fill? It is listed as unavailable in the current build. The rest of the AI-assisted tools — object selection, neural filters from the pack, the Beta editor, and Prompt to Edit — work without it. Compositing workflows that rely on generative expansion of a canvas edge won't have that option, but the Markup and selection-guided editing tools cover most of the same ground with a slightly different approach.

Can I use it alongside an older installation? The 27.10 build uses a separate preferences folder from previous major versions, so installing it won't overwrite a prior Photoshop setup. Brushes, actions, and custom workspaces can be migrated manually through the Presets folder, or rebuilt fresh if the older library had accumulated broken paths.

Should I be concerned if the Adobe Genuine window appears? A blocking utility ships in the package and can be added to startup if that window surfaces after activation. It handles the alert without touching any other Adobe processes or network services.
