Macs can open ZIP files out of the box, but they can't edit what's inside without unpacking everything first. BetterZip handles that — and a lot more — directly within the archive.

Archive editing — Add files to an existing archive or delete selected entries without a full unpack-repack cycle.

Direct extraction queue — Drop several archives onto the queue window and BetterZip extracts them in sequence, no dialogs required.

Archive comments — Embed descriptions inside ZIP and RAR archives for project notes or version tracking.

Encryption — Create password-protected archives with AES-256 encryption.

Quick Look preview — Peek at an archived file's contents before you decide to extract it.

Finder integration — Right-click any archive in the Finder to compress, extract, or preview, thanks to the bundled Finder extension.

AppleScript — Automate compression and extraction tasks with scripts that talk directly to the app.

ISO extraction — Open and pull files from disk images without mounting them.

As of version 6.0.6, BetterZip also lets you run the app in a language different from your system setting and skip restoring macOS metadata during extraction when you don't need it.

7z helper now uses Apple Silicon assembler optimizations

The jump from 6.0.5 to 6.0.6 is modest on paper but does alter a few daily workflows. The bundled 7z helper moved to v26.03 with assembler optimizations for Apple Silicon, which trims a second or two off large solid 7z extractions on M-series machines. If you handle multi-gigabyte archives regularly, the difference adds up across a week. The updated unrar library and refreshed zstd and brotli tools keep compatibility tight with archives created on newer Linux and Windows builds.

The new language override sits in Preferences under General. Choose any of the ten supported languages and BetterZip restarts in that locale without touching your system setting. This helps in shared environments where one user prefers the UI in German while the Mac itself stays in English. The extraction toggle — "Restore macOS metadata" — now has an off switch. Turn it off when you unpack a code repository or a cross-platform project tree and want clean file attributes, free of extended attributes that source control systems might flag as changes.

One fix in 6.0.6 addresses a rare crash during communication with external helpers. The crash surfaced unpredictably, often when queuing dozens of mixed-format archives. The update makes the helper handshake more tolerant of brief I/O stalls, so the queue keeps moving.

What to know before you install

Does BetterZip replace the built-in Archive Utility?

Not automatically. You decide which formats BetterZip claims. During first launch the app offers to associate itself with archive types; you can accept all, pick specific formats, or skip the step entirely and keep Archive Utility as the default for ZIP files while using BetterZip through its queue window or Finder extension.

Will it handle split RAR archives properly?

Yes — open the first part and BetterZip reconstructs the full file set. It reads multi-volume RAR, 7z and ZIP archives without needing all parts in the same folder at the moment of opening, though having them together speeds up the initial scan. The updated unrar library in 6.0.6 covers RAR5 split volumes with recovery records.

Can I preview password-protected files with Quick Look?

Only after you supply the password for the archive. Enter it once in the password dialog, and Quick Look works for every file inside that session. The password isn't cached to disk, so you enter it again when you reopen the archive later.

How does the "better zip mac" approach compare with command-line tools?

For scripting, BerryZip sends AppleScript commands to the app, which can be slower than piping tar or unzip directly in Terminal. But the AppleScript bridge lets you inspect archive contents, selectively remove entries, or add comments — operations that require multiple shell commands otherwise. For bulk work where you need previews or in-archive editing, the graphical queue beats writing wrapper scripts.

Password-protected ZIP speed on an M2 Air against the command line

On an MacBook Air with an M2 chip and 16 GB of RAM, creating a password-protected ZIP from a 2 GB folder of mixed documents takes roughly the same wall-clock time as the command-line zip tool with AES-256 flags. The CPU sits around 40 % across four efficiency cores during compression; the app doesn't pin performance cores unless you explicitly raise the compression level to maximum in Preferences.

Memory use stays modest. Opening a 4 GB 7z archive with 12,000 files pushes the app to about 180 MB of RAM during the listing phase, then drops back to 60 MB once the table is drawn. Extraction of that archive peaks at 220 MB. The queue window idles at under 30 MB even with a dozen pending jobs. No memory leaks observed across eight-hour sessions where the queue processed a rotating set of project backups.

The 7z helper's Apple Silicon assembler path shows its hand with LZMA2-compressed archives: extraction throughput improves roughly 15 % compared to version 6.0.5 on the same hardware. Brotli and zstd decompression feel snappy, especially on archives created with high compression levels — the updated libraries handle dictionary sizes up to 512 MB without stalling the UI. The app stays responsive during long operations; you can browse another archive or adjust queue order while extraction runs in the background.

Stability in 6.0.6 is solid. The helper crash that occasionally interrupted queue runs in the previous version hasn't reappeared. One edge case worth noting: dropping forty or more small archives onto the queue at once briefly freezes the window for a second as the list populates, then recovers. This is cosmetic — the queue builds correctly every time. For anyone who has explored the "betterzip mac crack" or "betterzip 5" search results looking for older builds, the current version is a cleaner baseline; the Apple Silicon optimizations alone make it a noticeable step up from the 5.x line, which lacked native arm64 code paths.
