A product designer opens the app on Monday morning, drops a few artboards onto the canvas and starts blocking out a mobile checkout flow. By lunchtime, those rough rectangles have become a clickable prototype shared with the engineering team. That is the kind of work Sketch is built for — screen design, prototyping and interface work done entirely on the Mac.

Good to know when you’re starting out

  • The canvas is infinite; artboards define your output boundaries for websites, app screens and icons.
  • Vector editing tools feel familiar if you have used Illustrator, but the inspector panel is tuned for pixel-precise UI work.
  • Built-in prototyping lets you link artboards and preview transitions without leaving the app.
  • A plugin ecosystem adds batch renaming, data population and other workflow accelerators that the community maintains.
  • The app runs natively on Apple Silicon and requires macOS Sequoia 15.0.0 or later.

Mac-only and screen-first limitations

  • Sketch is Mac-only; there is no Windows or iPad version.
  • It is purpose-built for screen design, not general illustration or print layout.
  • Collaboration features rely on a Sketch account, though solo work remains offline-first.

What the Florence release changed day to day

Version 2026.3.1 tidies several rough edges that designers bump into during repetitive layout work. The stack layout fix targets an old annoyance: when a text layer had a minimum width set, the stack container sometimes ignored it, forcing manual adjustments after every content change. Now the stack respects that width on the first layout pass, which removes a small but frequent friction for anyone building component libraries or data-driven tables.

Document windows adopting the system corner radius is a cosmetic shift that matters more on macOS Golden Gate, where every other app window curves the same way. Sketch no longer stands apart on a busy desktop, and the unified look helps when you are snapping windows side by side with Xcode or a browser.

Three fixes land squarely on Golden Gate users. Tooltips that used to clip against the screen edge now reposition correctly, so hovering over palette icons near the right side of the display shows the full label. The Rename Selected Layers sheet stopped misaligning its text fields, a glitch that made batch-renaming a guesswork exercise. And the blank-canvas bug that appeared while invoking Writing Tools — a new system feature — is gone; the artboard stays visible while you polish microcopy in a text layer, which is the whole point of having those tools available inline.

How a mobile app designer moves through a morning

A designer updating an onboarding flow for a banking app pulls a sketch 93 project file from the team server and starts reviewing the five screens handed off last week. The stack layout fix shows its value immediately: swapping a placeholder headline for the approved copy, which runs three characters longer, does not collapse the button group below it. She nudges a tint colour, re-exports the artboards as PNG for the iOS developer, and copies a shared prototype link into Slack — all before the stand-up call ends.

Later, she pastes a dozen rows of transaction data into a table component and watches the stack resize each row cell to match the widest text block. The minimum-width rule holds, so the amount column never shrinks below the width needed for four-digit figures. It is the kind of detail that saves a trip back to the file after QA flags a truncated currency symbol.

Where Sketch fits among the other tools

Sketch files often travel beyond the canvas. Designers drop artboards into prototyping tools for richer micro-interactions, then sync assets to developer handoff platforms through the plugin layer. On macOS Golden Gate, dragging a Sketch artboard directly into a Mail compose window attaches it as a PNG without an intermediate export step, and the system corner-radius match makes embedded previews look consistent with Finder thumbnails.

The plugin directory remains the connective tissue. A designer looking for a sketch torrent of community resources — icon sets, UI kits, colour palettes — will find them packaged as .sketch files rather than standalone downloads. Once installed, plugins that populate layers with live JSON data or run accessibility contrast checks pull Sketch closer to the browser and the codebase. Version 2026.3.1 does not introduce new integrations, but the Golden Gate fixes keep those existing bridges steady: no more tooltip clipping when configuring a plugin panel, no more blank artboards while a text plugin processes a localisation string.
