For players familiar with survival sandboxes like The Forest, this sequel sharpens every tool in the box. A search-and-rescue mission for a missing billionaire strands you on an island that shifts through four seasons, and the game does not wait for you to catch up.

Premise — A private military contractor dispatched to locate a wealthy失踪person on a remote, cannibal-inhabited island.

Single-player — The full narrative campaign, complete with new cutscenes and an alternate ending, plays out alone.

Multiplayer co-op — Up to eight players can tackle the island together, sharing building and survival duties.

Crafting — Combine items from your inventory to fashion weapons, tools, and shelter materials. Recipes are discovered as you experiment.

Building — Chop down trees and construct everything from a lean-to to a fortified cabin. The structural system uses free-placed logs and parts.

Seasonal changes — Summer, fall, winter, and spring cycle on the island. Winter freezes water sources and forces you to stockpile food and warmth.

Language — Voice audio is English. Interface text is changed through the settings menu, with 15 languages available including Russian, Japanese, and Finnish.

Why the crash site is your lifeline before nightfall

Your first instinct will be to explore, but the island punishes wandering without a plan. Spend the opening hours close to the crash site. Gather sticks, rocks, and cloth before the sun sets. A basic lean-to is not optional — without it, you cannot save the game, and losing progress to an early death is common.

Pay attention to the seasons indicator in the HUD. Spring and summer let you collect fresh salmon from streams, which cooks quickly over a fire. As fall sets in, hunt deer and store dried meat on a drying rack. A player who enters winter without a stockpile will spend more time starving than building.

Kelvin, the AI companion, is more useful than he first appears. Give him clear single tasks — clear trees, fill a log holder, fish — and he works steadily. Virginia, the three-legged mutant woman, can be recruited if you avoid attacking her during early encounters. She brings food and acts as an early warning system for cannibal patrols.

If the game shows an error on launch, run the Fix file from the mounted disk image before troubleshooting anything else. On Apple Silicon Macs, the Wineskin wrapper has handled the conversion well in testing on macOS Tahoe, and no further terminal work is usually needed.

AI that scouts your base and returns with backup

The obvious comparison is The Forest, the studio's previous title. Sons of the Forest inherits the same DNA — cannibals, crafting, co-op — but the AI is less predictable now. Enemies reconnoiter your base, retreat, and return with reinforcements in ways the first game only hinted at. Building is also freer: logs snap less rigidly, which means structures feel more organic but require more patience to get right.

Next to Rust, the tone splits hard. Rust is player-versus-player at its core, and its survival loop is driven by scarcity and raiding. Sons of the Forest keeps the pressure on through its environment and enemy factions, not other humans. The story campaign — with its five new cutscenes and alternate ending — gives a narrative spine that Rust lacks entirely. If you want a reason to finish instead of just persist, Endnight's game makes the stronger case.

Against Subnautica, the differences are about mood and setting. Both are open-world survival games with a plot, but Subnautica's underwater isolation is meditative until it is terrifying. Sons of the Forest is loud and tactile from the start. You are never alone; you are being watched. That said, building a cliffside cabin while fall foliage turns the forest orange scratches a similar creative itch. Players coming from Subnautica will recognize the same satisfaction in turning a hostile wilderness into a home.

Wineskin wraps the Windows executable for Apple Silicon — no VM needed

Does it run on a Mac without Windows? The Wineskin build wraps the Windows executable for Apple Silicon, so no separate Windows installation or virtual machine is required. Drag the app to Applications, mount the disk image, and launch.

Is the full single-player campaign included? Yes. The 1.0 release — version 53951 Build 17079992 — contains the complete story, the new title scene, five new cutscenes, and the alternate ending. Co-op is optional, not required to see the credits roll.

Will my progress carry over between single-player and co-op? Saves are separate per mode, so a world started alone stays alone. Co-op sessions use the host's save, and joining players keep their inventory when they return to their own game.

How punishing is the combat for new players? Cannibal encounters escalate based on your behaviour. Cutting down too many trees near patrol routes draws attention. Playing stealthily and building away from main paths keeps the early game manageable while you learn the block and parry timing.
