Three distinct maps and more than 20 weapons set the stage in Survivors of the Dawn, the sci-fi roguelite from indieGiant that landed on macOS in late 2023. The game drops a bounty hunter onto an alien battlefield and asks them to carve through endless waves by stacking weapon and item synergies into laser-focused builds.

Performance on Apple Silicon Macs holds steady even when the screen fills with projectiles and particle effects, though the game remains in active development and the current build represents an excerpt of the intended full release. Controls lean on keyboard and mouse by default, with no unusual hoops to jump through on macOS — once installed, it behaves like any native title. The developer is working through the final stretch toward 1.0, so players jumping in now get a slice of the full vision while the weapon roster and map count are still growing.

Check stacked modifiers from the pause menu

The pause menu doubles as a stats sheet. Hitting Escape freezes the action and shows every modifier currently stacked on the bounty hunter — ammo level, crit chance, projectile count, the works. It is the fastest way to check whether a newly grabbed item actually nudged the numbers before the next wave crashes in.

Double-tapping the movement key triggers a short dash, not a dodge roll. The dash has no invincibility frames, but it slides the character just far enough to slip between two charging marauders. The tutorial never mentions it, and plenty of survivors of the dawn mac full version players discover it by accident ten runs in.

Weapon auto-fire can be toggled per slot with a right-click on the weapon icon. Turning it off for a heavy single-shot cannon lets you time shots around reloads instead of wasting them on stragglers, while leaving rapid-fire guns on automatic keeps the screen clear without extra input.

Swap damage numbers to abbreviated format

Damage numbers. They are on by default and clutter the screen fast. Switching them to "abbreviated" in the gameplay tab shows compact values — 1.2K instead of 1,247 — which keeps the battlefield readable when three weapons are firing at once.

Screen shake intensity. Dropping it to 30% or lower makes tracking small enemy movements easier, especially on the third map where explosive synergies can turn the viewport into a washing machine. The setting lives under Display, tucked between resolution scale and particle quality.

Aim assist for controllers. The game lists controller support, but aim assist is set to "off" for new profiles. Bumping it to "low" gives just enough stickiness to make twin-stick movement feel fluid without yanking the reticle across the screen. Keyboard players can ignore this entirely.

Item tooltip delay. The default half-second pause before a tooltip appears is fine for reading, but during a run it feels like an eternity. Setting it to "instant" in the interface options means hovering over an unfamiliar item during the post-wave selection screen shows the description immediately — useful when the clock is ticking and marauders are already gathering at the edge of the map.
