CleanMyMac 5.7.0 arrived with new tools for cleaning and managing mail in Gmail, including email cleanup functionality. The update lands alongside the app's existing maintenance set, which covers app removal, app updating, and a large-file finder.

App removal

The app removal tool handles uninstalls and leftovers in one pass. MacPaw also ships App Cleaner & Uninstaller as a separate utility for the same task, so users who only need uninstall help have a lighter option.

Large-file cleanup

A dedicated tool finds and removes large files scattered across the drive. It slots in next to the built-in macOS storage manager rather than replacing it.

Mail management

First days with CleanMyMac 5.7.0

Grant full disk access right after dragging the app into Applications. On macOS 14 Sonoma and later the system blocks the scan engine without it, and the app will sit idle instead of telling you outright. Open System Settings, go to Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, and toggle CleanMyMac on before you launch it the first time.

Run the Smart Scan once and let it finish. Then ignore the results for a day. The point is not the cleanup number on the screen—it is that CleanMyMac now knows your drive layout. The second scan, run 24 hours later, will surface genuinely stale caches and logs that the first pass missed because the system was still rotating temp files from your previous uptime.

Skip the mail module until you have used the app for at least two days. The Gmail cleanup tools added in version 5.7.0 need OAuth access to your Google account, and letting any utility touch a live inbox before you trust its handling of local files is a sequence worth respecting. Test the local junk first—system logs, user caches, language packs you do not need. Then connect mail.

Reclaiming space on 256 GB and 512 GB drives fast

Mac users with 256 GB or 512 GB internal drives get the fastest payoff. The large-file finder and system-junk scan reclaim space that macOS's own storage manager either ignores or reports without a one-click removal path. Developers with multiple Xcode versions and simulator images will see double-digit gigabyte returns from a single pass through the system-junk module.

People who keep every email—promotions, receipts, ten-year-old newsletters—and use Gmail as their archive are the other natural audience for this version. The new mail cleanup does not just delete; it groups attachments by size and age, which turns a cluttered inbox into something manageable without the manual hunt through Google's web interface.

Photographers and video editors who offload card dumps to the desktop benefit from the large-file scanner, though they should verify results before deleting. The tool marks files by size, not by project relevance, and a 40-gigabyte Final Cut library looks the same as a forgotten disk image to an automated sweep.

Email cleanup finally reaches cloud accounts

Version 5.7.0 folded email into a utility that previously stayed local. Before this release, CleanMyMac had no path to cloud accounts. The shift means the app now straddles two very different cleanup domains: the predictable file system and the unpredictable, API-gated world of Gmail. In practice, this shows up as an extra authentication step that some users skip—and then wonder why the mail module does nothing.

The protection module also tightened its definition of adware in the last few point releases. Where earlier versions flagged only known malware signatures, the current build catches browser hijackers and configuration profiles that redirect search traffic. The alert looks the same as before, but the underlying detection has a broader scope.

Shredding the entire Trash wastes SSD endurance

Running the shredder on the entire Trash instead of individual files. The permanent-delete tool overwrites data to block recovery, which is useful for tax documents or client contracts, but wasted wear on the SSD when applied to a stack of screenshots. Beginners see the word "secure" and assume it belongs in every cleanup routine. It does not.

Uninstalling apps through the main interface without checking the leftovers list first. The removal tool presents a checkbox column that many users accept blindly. A checked box next to a folder named com.company.app might be preferences you want kept, especially for creative software that stores plugin registrations and license files in Application Support.

Trusting the large-file scan result counts without opening the enclosing folder. A single Logic Pro sound library can appear as forty separate large files. Deleting three of them breaks the library. Open the parent directory, check what you are looking at, then decide.

Grabbing a cleanmymac dmg from an unfamiliar source and launching it without verifying the disk image. The file name looks right, the icon looks right, and the installer asks for permissions it should not need. Stick with the build from the official site so the protection module is not the thing you should have been protecting yourself against.

The Gmail tools added in this version extend cleanup to email, which previously was not part of the app's scope.
