macOS previews handle common formats well enough, but the moment you need to browse a folder of mixed RAW files, PDFs, and archived comics without unpacking everything first, the built-in tools show their limits. EdgeView steps into that gap as a dedicated viewer built for broad format support and archive browsing on the Mac.

Two questions people ask before installing

  • Can it open files inside ZIPs and RARs without extracting them? Yes. EdgeView reads ZIP, RAR, CBZ, CBR, and 7-Zip archives directly, including encrypted archives and archives nested inside other archives. You can flip through images inside a compressed folder the same way you would in a regular directory.
  • Does it handle RAW and design formats, or just standard photos? It opens RAW files alongside JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, WEBP, PSD, EPS, PDF, AI, OpenEXR, HDR, and TGA. That range means a photographer’s RAW library and a designer’s working files can live in the same viewer.

Working with files from the viewer

EdgeView includes a file browser that goes beyond simple previews. You can rename, delete, and rate files without switching to the Finder, and it pulls images from local disks as well as AFP, SMB, and FTP network volumes. A Quick Look extension adds archive thumbnails and previews directly in Finder, so compressed image collections aren't just opaque blobs on the desktop.

Archives open as folders, not as expandable packages

One early stumble involves the archive browser. New users sometimes drag a ZIP or RAR onto the app window expecting it to expand the whole thing at once. EdgeView treats archives as browsable folders — you open the file, then navigate the tree inside. Dragging a compressed file onto the dock icon or the main window simply opens the archive root; it does not decompress anything to disk unless you choose to save a file out.

Another common misstep is overlooking the rating and rename tools in the sidebar. A photographer who cycles through a shoot and rates keepers directly in the file browser will save a full pass later in Lightroom. People who jump back to Finder for every rename waste the app’s real advantage. Also worth knowing: the magnifier works on a long press, not a toggle. Newcomers sometimes click repeatedly looking for a loupe that activates only while the mouse button is held down.

Rating RAW frames straight from a live AFP volume

A magazine photo editor receives a morning brief with asset links spread across the office AFP volume and two encrypted client ZIPs. She opens the first archive in EdgeView, flips through RAW frames with the scroll wheel, and rates selects with a quick keystroke — no extraction, no waiting. A PDF layout draft sits in the same directory; a double-click brings it up inside the viewer without launching a separate application. When the art director messages about a specific frame from yesterday’s shoot, she pulls the neighboring file view, confirms the sequence, and renames the file from the sidebar before replying. The whole cull happens inside one window, and Finder thumbnails for every archive are already visible because the Quick Look extension has been generating previews in the background.
