Version 8.24 of Elmedia Player Pro from Eltima Software adds native playback of M4B audiobook files, a format common to Apple's Books ecosystem. The update also tightens up streaming behaviour: the Mac is now less likely to fall asleep during an active stream, and a bug that threw errors when opening the device list for streaming has been patched. Compatibility work for macOS 26 rounds out the release.

The player is built for people who keep a mixed library of video and audio and want one application to handle most of it without hunting for codecs. It reads a wide set of formats out of the box:

  • FLV, SWF, WMV, AVI, MOV, MP4, MPG, and MKV for video
  • MP3, FLAC, DAT, and M4V for audio
  • Passthrough for AC-3 and DTS audio on DVDs when the output chain supports S/PDIF or HDMI
  • Online video played directly inside the app, via a built-in web browser
  • Screenshot capture during video playback, saved with a keystroke
  • Flexible audio routing to headphones, speakers, or other connected output devices

The interface is localised in twelve languages. It runs on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs from macOS 10.12 forward and adds the M4B format alongside its existing audiobook and music file handling.

Drag a mixed-format folder onto the dock to queue everything at once

Most days start with a folder of mixed files from a colleague's USB drive or a download that unpacked into six formats. You drag the folder onto the dock icon. Elmedia scans the contents and queues everything it recognises — the MKV of a presentation recording, an MP3 voice memo, a short FLV clip exported years ago. The playlist populates in seconds.

Double-click the first item. Playback begins immediately on a MacBook Pro's built-in display. The player's hardware-accelerated decoding keeps CPU draw low; the fan stays quiet through an hour of HD video. Tap the spacebar to pause, tap it again to resume — the standard macOS media key works without configuration.

About twenty minutes in, you remember a frame worth capturing. You hit the screenshot shortcut (Cmd-Shift-S is the default) and the frame freezes briefly. A save dialog offers TIFF, PNG, or GIF. Pick PNG, name it, drop it into a shared folder. The video keeps playing behind the dialog; Elmedia does not interrupt playback for the capture.

Later, the same session turns to an audiobook file someone sent as an M4B. The player loads it into the same playlist, no second window needed. Chapter markers appear in the navigation bar. You skip forward to chapter four, then adjust playback speed to 1.2x using the playback controls tucked next to the timeline. Voice pitch holds steady — the player handles speed adjustment without the chipmunk effect that plagues lesser players.

When the workday shifts to a different screen, you click the AirPlay icon in the lower right of the playback window and select the Apple TV in the conference room. The stream picks up after a two-second buffer. As of version 8.24, streaming no longer triggers an error when opening the device list, and the Mac stays awake for the duration of the stream — a small but meaningful fix for anyone who has walked back to a dark screen mid-presentation.

Paste a video URL to extract and play the stream directly

Several touches sit just below the surface. The built-in web browser qualifies as one: it is not a full browser replacement, but when you paste a video URL into the address bar, Elmedia extracts the stream and plays it inside the player rather than in a web-page wrapper. That means you can use the same screenshot tool and audio routing on online video that you use on local files.

The audio output selector lives in the playback window, not buried in a preferences pane. A dropdown lets you route sound to USB headphones, a Bluetooth speaker, or the Mac's internal speakers while video plays on the main display. Multi-channel audio support goes up to eight channels, and the passthrough for AC-3 and DTS works transparently when you have an S/PDIF or HDMI chain connected — useful for anyone playing DVD rips through a receiver.

Another quiet feature: the player remembers where you stopped. Close a file halfway through, reopen it later, and playback resumes from the same position. For audiobook-length M4B files, that alone saves frustration. You can also right-click any item in the playlist and choose to convert Flash EXE files to SWF — a niche capability that survives from the era when Flash projectors were a common deliverable.

How Elmedia fits with other apps and macOS

On a Mac with AirPlay receivers on the network, Elmedia doubles as a stream sender and a stream receiver. You can play a file on one Mac and send it to another Mac running Elmedia, which is useful in a two-machine editing setup where one screen is calibrated and the other is not. The player also respects the system media keys and the Touch Bar on MacBook Pro models, displaying scrub controls and a volume slider without extra setup.

Integration with the Files app is straightforward. The playlist accepts drag-and-drop from Finder, and the Open With menu in Finder lists Elmedia for every format it supports. Quick Look covers previews, but for sustained playback of obscure codecs — WMV files from an old archive, say — Elmedia fills the gap that QuickTime leaves. The screenshot tool writes to any folder you choose, so it slots into a workflow with Preview or an image editor without intermediate steps.

Audio routing works alongside system-level output switching in macOS. When you plug in USB headphones, the player can follow the system default or stay locked to a device you selected earlier. That independence prevents sudden audio cutovers mid-playback if macOS switches outputs on its own.

Set the screenshot format to PNG before your first capture

After dragging the app into the Applications folder, spend ten minutes on a few settings. Open Preferences and confirm that the screenshot format is set to PNG — GIF and TIFF are available but PNG fits most modern workflows. Check the audio output device dropdown and select your usual headphones or speakers rather than leaving it on system default. That avoids the moment when you press play and sound comes from the wrong set of speakers.

If you stream to an Apple TV or another Mac, test the AirPlay connection early. Right-click the player window, choose the streaming option, and verify the device list populates without errors — the version 8.24 fix addresses exactly this step. Once a connection succeeds, Elmedia remembers the target device for the session.

For audiobook listeners, try loading an M4B file and tapping the chapter markers in the navigation bar. Set the playback speed control to a comfortable rate; the adjustment is subtle enough at 1.1x or 1.2x that it becomes a default for spoken-word content. The sleep-prevention improvement in this build means a long listening session will not darken the screen mid-chapter, so you can leave the Energy Saver settings alone.

Finally, drag a few mixed-format files into the playlist at once. Notice that Elmedia sorts them in the order they were added, not alphabetically — you can reorder by dragging rows. The player does not force a library import or database scan. It works file by file, folder by folder, which keeps the first hours with the app simple and gives you time to discover the download and conversion tools later.
