Where the Mac’s built-in QuickTime Player draws a firm line on codec support, Infuse Pro steps in to handle nearly any file you throw at it. The Pro feature set from Firecore unlocks high-end audio passthrough and network streaming tools that go well beyond basic playback.

What the Pro tier adds for experienced users

  • Dolby Digital Plus (AC3/E-AC3), DTS, and DTS-HD audio decoding.
  • Direct connections to Mac, PC, and NAS storage over SMB, NFS, FTP, and WebDAV.
  • Trakt synchronization for watched history, ratings, and comments across devices.
  • On-the-fly subtitle loading from OpenSubtitles or local files.

Requires macOS 12 and includes the full Pro unlock

  • Requires macOS 12 or later, running on either Apple Silicon or Intel hardware.
  • The app package includes the Pro feature set.

Scraper fails on files named like movie-final-export-2.mkv

New users often dump a folder of MKV files onto Infuse and expect a polished library instantly. The app does fetch artwork and metadata, but it follows strict naming rules. A file called movie-final-export-2.mkv will stump the scraper every time. Rename files to the actual title plus year — The French Connection (1971).mkv — and the matching becomes far more reliable.

Another early slip is assuming every audio track will play without touching a setting. Infuse Pro ships with passthrough disabled for Dolby and DTS codecs. Users plug in a home theater receiver, hit play on a DTS-HD track, and hear silence. Flipping the audio output to passthrough in preferences fixes it immediately, but many never look there until a forum post points them to it.

A subtler mistake involves network paths. People mount an SMB share in Finder, then add that mounted volume to Infuse. That works until the Mac restarts and the mount point shifts. Adding the share directly through Infuse’s own network browser — typing the server IP or hostname — builds a stable connection that survives reboots and sleep cycles.

Fix high-bitrate Wi‑Fi stutter with a 200 MB streaming cache

Playback stutters on high-bitrate files over Wi‑Fi. The problem is rarely the router’s raw speed; it is usually buffer settings. Infuse defaults to a conservative cache size. Crank the streaming cache up to 200 MB or more in playback settings, and give the file a few seconds to fill the buffer. On a congested network, switching the NAS connection from SMB to NFS can also drop latency enough to smooth things out.

Subtitles appear as gibberish characters. The file’s encoding does not match what Infuse expects. Open the subtitle file in TextEdit, duplicate it with proper UTF-8 encoding, and reload. For OpenSubtitles downloads, picking a different upload from the list often solves it — some community uploads carry broken character sets.

Library artwork vanishes after a sync. Infuse Pro syncs library data through iCloud, but large libraries sometimes trip over stale cache entries. Clearing the metadata cache from the Library tab forces a fresh fetch and usually restores everything within a few minutes. Users who avoid iCloud sync altogether can turn it off and rely on local-only library management, which also sidesteps the occasional sync conflict.

Trakt scrobbling stops working. Re-authenticating the Trakt connection under Integrations almost always revives it. If it keeps dropping, check whether another device on the same Trakt account is hammering the API with rapid check-ins; Trakt’s rate limiting can temporarily block new scrobbles from Infuse.

Switch audio to passthrough before playing your first file

Open preferences before playing a single file and adjust these items. They shape the experience more than anything else in the app.

  • Audio output: set to passthrough if you own a receiver or soundbar that decodes DTS or Dolby. Letting Infuse send the raw bitstream avoids unnecessary software decoding and keeps surround channels intact.
  • Streaming cache: push this to at least 100 MB for wireless connections, and consider 300 MB for 4K remux files. Local wired playback needs far less, but a higher value never hurts on a machine with RAM to spare.
  • Subtitles download language: narrow it to the one or two languages you actually need. Leaving it on “all” clutters the subtitle picker with a dozen options per film.
  • Library view default: switch from grid to list if you browse mainly by filename rather than artwork. List view shows the full filename at a glance and makes bulk renaming decisions faster.
  • Skip buttons: define custom skip lengths for forward and back. The stock 30-second jump works for ad breaks but is too coarse for skipping a studio logo. Dial the back-skip to 10 seconds for more precise control.

Spending five minutes on those toggles turns Infuse Pro from a capable player into something that behaves exactly as you expect it to, every time you launch it.
