The mask system changes how every firefight feels. In PIGFACE, you’re not just picking up a stat boost — each mask you find and unlock directly increases your killing ability, turning you into a more efficient weapon for the people who hold your leash. A bomb implanted in your head ensures you don’t forget who’s in charge.

Working off a debt you didn’t choose

Minute to minute, you’re running contract-based missions handed down by your captors. Each completed job earns money, which you’ll funnel straight into the black market for equipment that keeps you alive. The shooting is fast-paced and unrelenting, pushing you through tight arenas where hesitation means a reload from the last checkpoint. There’s no grand liberation arc here — just the next contract, the next payday, and the constant threat of the bomb going off if you step out of line.

What the early access build actually delivers

As of version 0.30, delivered through Wineskin for Apple Silicon Macs, the loop is lean: grab a contract, shoot your way through, get paid, buy gear, repeat. The mask unlocks add a layer of risk-reward — do you push into harder territory hoping for a rare drop, or play it safe with the cash you have? It’s ultra-violent and stripped back, with the feel of a developer testing exactly how mean a first-person shooter can get before players flinch.

Grime and industrial sprawl replace retro pixels

Mac first-person shooters tend to cluster around either military realism or retro throwbacks. PIGFACE lands somewhere meaner. Next to something like Prodeus, the early access build shares the fast, gory tempo but trades retro pixel aesthetics for grimy industrial spaces and a persistent hostage-narrative. Prodeus leans on level-by-level score chasing; PIGFACE ties every bullet to a debt.

Severed Steel offers another point of comparison — both games reward aggressive momentum, but Severed Steel’s acrobatic gunplay feels balletic where PIGFACE feels punishing. You slide and flip in Severed Steel; here, you crouch behind a rusted forklift counting rounds, knowing the bomb timer is always ticking in the fiction. The mask system also gives PIGFACE a progression hook that pure arena shooters rarely bother with, turning each contract into a gear hunt as much as a survival run.

Dusk fans will recognize the speed, though PIGFACE adds an economic layer Dusk intentionally avoids. Where Dusk throws you into mayhem with a full arsenal, contracts here force you to earn every weapon attachment through the black market, stretching the tension across missions rather than individual levels.

Double-tap weapon-swap skips the holster delay

A few details in the 0.30 build are easy to overlook during a first contract. Tapping the weapon-swap key twice skips the holster animation and pulls out your sidearm instantly — a lifesaver when a shotgun runs dry mid-corridor. Masks can be swapped from the pause menu without returning to a safe room, letting you adapt to enemy composition between waves. The black market interface also remembers your last browsed category, so repeat visits for ammo or armor plates take fewer clicks.

Sound cues deserve attention as well. Enemy footsteps shift from echoing clangs on metal grating to muffled thuds on concrete, giving you positional awareness before sightlines open up. The bomb’s warning tone becomes more frequent when you stray too far from mission boundaries, a detail the tutorial never explains explicitly. And if you hold the interact key near a dropped mask rather than tapping it, the pickup triggers a brief invincibility frame — risky to time, but it can pull you through an ambush when a contract goes sideways.

Masks are items you can find and unlock during gameplay that directly increase your killing ability, making you more effective in combat.

You complete fast-paced contract missions to earn money, then spend it on the black market for equipment — all while a bomb in your head enforces loyalty.
