A songwriter sits with a verse idea, a guitar line and a blank drum track. They drag the rough audio into EZdrummer 3 and let Bandmate suggest a groove before the coffee gets cold.

What does the Bandmate feature actually do?

Bandmate analyzes dragged audio or MIDI and proposes matching drum grooves from the included library. The goal, according to Toontrack, is to keep the writing process moving without switching to a separate pattern browser.

Can you shape a groove without programming every hit?

Edit Play Style changes a base groove in real time, adjusting intensity and feel with a few controls. The software ships with MIDI grooves performed in three different rooms, and mix-ready presets let you audition a finished sound immediately.

Icons refreshed for macOS Tahoe and a mixer recall fix

Version 3.1.2 updated the standalone and project icons to match the macOS Tahoe style. The release also corrected a mixer issue where toggling Solo or Mute could clear the opposite recall state.

Does this version support newer expansion packs?

As of version 3.1.2, the software is compatible with EZX expansion packs released from Q4 2025 onward, and includes internal improvements for the Infinity Grid EZX.

Tap a rhythm to search the groove library

The Tap2Find button sits in the browser toolbar and rarely gets a second glance during the first session. Click it, tap a rhythm on your desk or keyboard, and the groove library filters to patterns that match. No MIDI controller is required. A songwriter with a verse feel in their head but no vocabulary for "sixteenth-note hi-hat with a displaced snare" can just knock it out with two fingers.

Starred grooves persist across sessions. If a pattern works for a chorus but you are not ready to commit, star it. The groove appears in a filtered list later, even after you have auditioned a hundred others. The star system is also useful for building a shortlist before the Song Creator assembles anything.

Drag and drop works in more directions than the manual emphasizes. You can drag a groove from the browser straight to the song track, but you can also drag a block of audio from the Finder onto the Bandmate drop zone, or pull a MIDI region from your DAW onto the same area. The software does not care where the source came from — it analyzes the transient pattern and rhythm density, then returns suggestions.

The Grid Editor remembers the last note length you placed. If you program a pattern at 1/16 resolution and then switch kits, the grid stays at 1/16 until you change it. This avoids the quiet frustration of clicking a snare and getting a whole-note.

What the 3.1.2 fixes mean day to day

The CC recording fix matters most to anyone who rides a hi-hat pedal while laying down a song-track performance. Before version 3.1.2, continuous controller data — like hi-hat openness from a pedal — could drop out during recording. The result was a pattern that played back with a static hat position, losing the articulation that made the take feel alive. The fix restores that data capture so the song track records what the foot actually played.

The mixer Solo/Mute recall bug was one of those issues that wasted ten minutes before you trusted your own ears. A user could solo a kick and snare to check phase, then un-solo them, only to find that a mute they had set earlier on the overheads was gone. Toggling one state cleared the other. Version 3.1.2 keeps Solo and Mute independent, so a monitoring decision made at 9 p.m. is still there at 9 a.m.

The updated macOS Tahoe icons are cosmetic, but a mismatched icon in the Dock is the kind of thing that makes a tool feel unmaintained. The change signals ongoing support for Mac users who keep their systems current.

Audition seven kits in the standalone app first

Start inside the standalone application, not the plug-in. The standalone loads faster for browsing and lets you hear kits at full resolution without a DAW project getting in the way. Spend the first session auditioning the seven kits across the three rooms. Switch rooms on the same kit — the difference between the tight booth and the live room changes how a groove sits in a mix far more than swapping a snare sample does.

Pick one groove from the library, drag it onto the song track, then open the Song Creator. Let it build a three-minute arrangement from that single pattern. The result will not be your finished track, but it reveals how the software thinks about song structure: where it places fills, when it introduces variation, how it handles an outro. Understanding that logic makes manual song-track edits faster later.

On day two, drag in a rough mix of something you have already written. Bandmate works best with audio that has clear transient information — a strummed acoustic guitar or a percussive piano part gives it more to latch onto than a sustained pad. If the first suggestion is wrong, tap the rhythm manually with Tap2Find and compare results.

Program one pattern from scratch in the Grid Editor before the week is out. Even a single bar of kick and snare teaches you where the velocity lane sits, how to nudge hits off the grid, and what the playback engine does with ghost notes. The Grid Editor is not the headline feature, but songwriters who avoid it leave a lot of control on the table.

AU, VST3, and AAX support on Mac

Does it work as a plug-in inside a DAW or only standalone? EZdrummer 3 runs as an AU, VST3 and AAX plug-in on Mac, alongside the standalone application. The plug-in instance receives the same kits, grooves and Song Creator tools as the standalone. You can sketch an arrangement in the standalone and open the same kit later inside Logic, Ableton Live or any compatible host.

Will expansion packs from older EZdrummer versions load here? Most earlier EZX expansions are recognized, and version 3.1.2 added support for packs released from Q4 2025 onward. The internal improvements for the Infinity Grid EZX suggest Toontrack is keeping the format current, so libraries acquired over time remain usable.

Can you export audio or only MIDI? The song track can be dragged out as a MIDI file into a DAW, where it triggers the same kit loaded in the plug-in. You can also route individual drum channels to separate mixer tracks for audio processing. The software does not bounce audio internally, but the multi-out routing gives you kick, snare, hi-hat, toms, overheads and room as discrete signals in the DAW mixer.

Is an internet connection required? Activation completes once, after which the software runs offline. The groove library, kits and rooms are local. No cloud features gate the core workflow, so a songwriter working in a rehearsal room without Wi-Fi faces no interruption.

Five-day folk-rock EP tracked on a MacBook

A producer takes on three tracks for a folk-rock EP with a five-day turnaround. The client wants live-sounding drums but the budget does not cover a studio day. The producer installs EZdrummer 3 on a MacBook and opens the first rough mix — a strummed acoustic guitar tracked to a click at 118 bpm.

They drag the guitar audio into Bandmate. The software returns four groove suggestions. Two are too busy for the verse, one is a half-time feel that pulls the energy down. The fourth is a simple backbeat with a loose snare from the live room kit. The producer drags it to the song track, copies the block across eight bars, and opens Edit Play Style to reduce intensity for the first verse. By the time the chorus arrives, the intensity slider is back at center and the pattern breathes with the arrangement.

Day three, the producer taps a rhythm for the bridge using Tap2Find — a kick on one, a snare on three, a push on the and of four. The browser narrows to four patterns. One adds a tom fill at the turnaround that matches the bass movement the client sent as a phone recording. The producer stars it, drags it in, and moves on.

On the final day, the three songs sit in the DAW as MIDI regions driving the same kit. The producer routes kick and snare to separate channels for EQ, leaves the room mics untouched for ambience, and prints the stems. The client asks if they booked a session drummer. The producer says the drums were tracked in a room they cannot afford, which is true in every sense that matters.
