Five effect modules sit inside a single plug-in window, ready to warp a dry vocal into a synthetic pad, a talkbox lead, or a distorted texture. VocalSynth 2 loads as an AU, VST, or AAX plug-in on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, and version 2.5.0 brought official support for macOS Monterey 12.3.x. The interface ships in English only.

Runs inside your DAW, Neutron, and Ozone via AU, VST, AAX

  • Runs as AU, VST, and AAX on 64-bit Intel and ARM processors.
  • Requires macOS Monterey 12.3.x or newer, according to iZotope’s release notes.
  • Communicates directly with Neutron, Ozone, and Tonal Balance Control through iZotope’s inter-plug-in protocol.
  • Operates in any DAW that hosts the supported plug-in formats.

What the modules deliver

The plug-in layers five stompbox-style effects — Vocoder, Compuvox, Polyvox, Talkbox, and Biovox — that can be blended, bypassed, or chained. Each module models a distinct vocal-transformation technique, from analog vocoding to physical-modeled talkbox tubes. Because VocalSynth 2 shares state with other iZotope processors, a mix engineer can open it inside an Ozone session and see the vocal processing reflected in Tonal Balance Control without manually routing sidechain signals.

Shaping a vocal hook from a dry take

Pick a lead vocal phrase — four bars is enough — and drop VocalSynth 2 onto the track. Switch the processing mode to MIDI, open a blank MIDI clip on a second track, and route it into the plug-in. The note pitches will now drive the Vocoder module’s carrier, so a monophonic line becomes a chordal synth pad layered under the original voice. Dial the Vocoder mix to about 60 percent wet, then bring in the Biovox module at 25 percent to restore some organic mouth noise and breath. The result is a hybrid that still sounds like a singer but moves with the chord progression.

For a talkbox-style hook, bypass Biovox and activate the Talkbox module instead. Keep the MIDI track playing a short, plucked pattern and reduce the vocal track’s fader while raising the plug-in’s output. Adjust the Talkbox shape control — a slider that shifts the physical model from a narrow tube resonance toward a wider cavity — until the tone sits just above the snare in the mix. High-pass the result at 120 Hz to prevent low-end mud against the bass line.

Once the hook sits right, commit the audio. Bounce the processed track in place so VocalSynth 2 releases its CPU load. On an Apple Silicon Mac, the native ARM build handles real-time playback of two or three instances easily, but a project with multiple virtual-instrument layers benefits from freezing early.

Apple silicon native code slashed session load times

The shift to Apple silicon native code in version 2.5.0 cut session load times and removed the need for Rosetta translation. Users who run large Ozone master chains alongside VocalSynth 2 saw the biggest practical gain — the plug-in now initializes in parallel with other iZotope processors without stalling the DAW’s startup scan. Producer forums note that live MIDI tracking also became tighter on M-series machines, with less audible latency when using the Auto mode to harmonize a live input.

Version 2.6.1 addressed a narrow but disruptive bug: some musicians who upgraded from 2.5.0 found their existing authorization rejected, which locked the plug-in into demo silence. The fix restored normal operation without requiring a reinstall or a new license file. For anyone who held off updating because of that authorization snag, 2.6.1 closes the loop.

Option-click a fader to instantly reset its blend

  • Option-click any module mix fader to reset it to zero, saving the drag back when a blend gets away from you.
  • Command-click a module’s power button to solo it instantly — useful for isolating the Compuvox glitch layer before re-blending.
  • The spectral display reacts to vowel shapes in real time; a wide open “ah” vowel shows a different energy spread than a closed “ee,” helping dial in Biovox formant settings by eye.
  • Drag the module order tabs left or right in the top bar to reorder the signal chain without opening a menu. Placing Compuvox before Vocoder produces a cleaner robot tone; reversing them yields a more chaotic, broken-speaker texture.
  • Sidechain mode reads an external audio input directly from the DAW’s sidechain bus — no extra routing inside the plug-in needed. Drop a drum loop onto the sidechain source and VocalSynth 2 will use its transients to gate the vocal, effectively turning the voice into a rhythmic element.

Switch global mode to MIDI before touching any fader

Open the plug-in, and before touching any module fader, set the global processing mode. Auto mode follows the vocal’s pitch envelope and fits most melodic material, but switching to MIDI mode immediately hands harmonic control to a keyboard or clip. Sidechain mode, meanwhile, turns the plug-in into an envelope-following modulation engine — ideal when the vocal needs to pulse against a kick drum or a synth arpeggio.

Next, pull the master dry/wet control down to 50 percent. The modules are aggressive by default, and a full-wet blend can bury the original articulation. Starting at half-mix preserves intelligibility while still letting Polyvox or Vocoder reshape the tone. Once the texture locks in, nudge the wet level up in small increments.

Under the hood, the stereo width knob affects all modules at once. A narrow setting — around 30 percent — keeps the processed signal focused in the center, which matters when the vocal sits in a dense chorus. Wider settings above 70 percent spread synthetic layers across the stereo field, useful for a bridge or an outro where the voice becomes more of a pad.

Questions readers asked

Yes. Version 2.5.0 and later include native ARM 64-bit support alongside the x86 64-bit build.

According to iZotope, it exchanges data with Neutron, Ozone, and Tonal Balance Control when they are loaded in the same session.

The developer lists macOS Monterey 12.3.x as the minimum supported release as of version 2.5.0.
