Most co-op games hand you a weapon and point you at the enemy. Barotrauma hands you a leaky submarine, a nuclear reactor you barely understand, and a crew whose loyalty is anything but certain. Set on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, this 2D submarine simulator pits you and a handful of survivors against an ocean full of alien sea monsters, crushing pressure, and the creeping fear that someone on board is working against you.

Cooperate to steer a sub through alien ruins

It blends cooperative survival horror with RPG-style character progression. You travel underwater, complete missions for the last remnants of humanity, and explore the ruins of an alien civilization while managing on-board systems like sonar, weapons, engines, and pumps.

One crewmate can secretly wreck the mission

Yes. The game supports multiplayer with friends and strangers, and it includes an optional traitor mechanic that lets one crew member secretly sabotage the mission. Ragdoll physics and unpredictable sea creatures ensure that even a loyal crew faces constant chaos.

Are there tools for making your own content?

Barotrauma ships with built-in modding tools, including a Submarine Editor and Character Editor. These editors are integrated with the Steam Workshop, so players can design custom submarines and monsters and share them directly.

An engineer's first dive

A station engineer stepping into Barotrauma for the first time will likely gravitate toward the reactor room — and immediately regret it. The nuclear reactor runs on fission rate and turbine output, two sliders that seem simple until a mudraptor rams the hull and the captain screams for full power. Crank the fission rate too high and the core temperature spikes; dial it back too far and the pumps stop. While the rest of the crew fights flooding with welding tools, the engineer sits hunched over a control panel, rewiring junction boxes on the fly and praying the wiring holds. That single session teaches more about the game's systems than any tutorial ever could.

Runs native on M-series chips, no Rosetta needed

Does it work on Apple Silicon? Yes. The current build runs on both ARM and 64-bit x86 Macs. If you grab a Barotrauma free download from a source that provides the ARM binary, it launches without Rosetta on M-series machines.

Is it worth playing solo? The single-player campaign includes AI crewmates you can order around, and they handle basic tasks competently enough to keep the sub running. The atmosphere holds up alone, too — the sonar pings and distant creature calls feel even more oppressive when you have nobody to joke with. That said, the traitor mechanic and the sheer unpredictability of human decision-making make multiplayer the sharper experience.

How big is the download? The game is not particularly heavy by modern standards. A Barotrauma torrent or direct download typically clocks in well under a gigabyte, which surprises people who expect a sprawling 3D world. Europa's ocean fits inside a compact package.

Do I need to mod it? Not at first. The vanilla submarines and monster varieties offer dozens of hours before you feel any itch for custom content. When you do, the Steam Workshop integration means you can pull in new subs and creatures without touching a single file outside the game.
