Speedrunners chase it for the breakneck pace, and players who enjoy having a good run torn apart by a single misplaced bullet keep coming back for the punishment. Nuclear Throne is the definitive after-the-bomb top-down shooter from Vlambeer.

What kind of shooter is this?

It is a roguelike-like that resets you to the beginning on death. No checkpoints, no saves. The core loop is a frantic scramble through procedurally generated wastelands, picking up better weapons and praying the next doorway does not hold a burst of green poison. Movement is fast, and every enemy projectile is lethal if you stop paying attention.

Who can you play as?

The game ships with 12 playable characters. Each one starts with a unique active ability and a different rhythm in combat. Fish can roll through gunfire, Crystal shields up, and Melting demands a near-perfect run just to survive the first world. Unlocking the full cast is part of the grind.

How does progression work?

You fight across seven main worlds, but the path is never quite the same twice. Along the way you pick from about thirty mutation options every time you level up. Extra feet lets you strafe faster, and boiling veins makes you immune to your own explosions. The choices stack, and the right combination can turn a doomed run into a throne run.

What is the package like?

It is a tight, complete release. The soundtrack comes from Yukiyo Callio, and the weapon and enemy effects were handled by Jonas Turner. Originally released on December 5, 2015, the game landed on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

Windowed mode snaps to 4:3 and leaves overhead for OBS

Nuclear Throne plays well with OBS for anyone wanting to capture a full run without frame drops — the game's native windowed mode snaps cleanly to a 4:3 canvas, and the low system overhead leaves headroom for streaming software. On macOS the title also respects system-wide focus modes and Do Not Disturb, so a notification will not yank you out of a loop. Players who record clips with QuickTime Player or feed audio into BlackHole for routing will find the sound mix balanced right out of the gate, with no need to duck music or effects manually.

Splash damage and ricochets make hugging walls a death trap

The biggest early mistake is treating cover like it matters. Walls block line of sight but splash damage and ricochets laugh at corners, so a player who hugs a pillar against a grenade launcher is usually dead anyway. Another common blunder is hoarding radiation early; grabbing experience orbs when you are already at full health and ammo puts you in bad positions for no immediate gain. Beginners also cling to the revolver out of comfort, ignoring that the nuclear throne mac full version includes over a hundred weapons, and sticking with the starting peashooter past world two makes every subsequent level harder than it needs to be.

Questions readers asked

The game includes a local co-op mode for two players on the same machine.

Reaching and defeating the Nuclear Throne itself is the final goal, but the unlockable characters and daily challenge runs extend the replay loop well beyond a single victory.
